Background Loop for Flash Game "Blitz Solitaire"

I need one background song for my game. As there will be only one level, the song should be 2-4 minutes long, and be able to loop.

(Please create and submit a shorter 30 sec. part first, before you create the whole piece, so i can tell if it's the right style/direction and you don't waste your time!)

The song should orientate on the music of the 30's/40's:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruLIkHIIuwE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDQpZT3GhDg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSK-1guFLDk

The song should be rather slow, not too pushy/overwhelming. I will probably put some soundeffects to the game,so they should be able to be heard over your song.

The perfect contender has both a "normal" part, and a "speedier" part that can be used for the end of the game when the "health" of the player gets low...

I will attach some screenshots.
Please don't hesitate to ask any questions!

Thanks for your help!

hi mihai,

thanks for your submission. the quality of it is really great. i like the trumpet and the pace of the piece. i doesnt have quite the 30's-40's / gritty feeling im looking for though. for more inspiration you can actually take almost every song that was played in the game fallout 3. (youtube has tons of them)

thanks again!

Thanks for the fast answer.
Well, I know that the feel is more like detective noir movies but I wanted you to hear the trumpet :)
Anyway, right now I'm working on a more Dixieland/ New Orleans kind of track. Would be that style more suitable ?

Uploaded another idea.
I'm glad to see one of my favorite composers from AJ, Sergei Stern. Nice music man, nice music.

Mihai - hey, how are u ? :) Thanks !
U're a great musician, great live trumpet playing going on here .. :)

@ Sergei
Man, we should definitely make a track together, or even more, a jazz album.

I uploaded a new track, something that popped in my mind last night just before going to sleep... so the quality of mix is not the usual I do, also, everything is played on keyboard. Couldn't record real trumpet at 1 AM :))
Anyway, if you like the melody we can work on it to fit more on the concept. Put some real instruments there, make it a bit more powerful in the middle and going to a more "crazy feel" in the end, for the end of the game.

Mihai - jazzz album.. sounds great ! Maybe trip-hop, electronic jazz or something like that? :)

Mihai_Sorohan

@ Sergei
cool, that would be great.
Also, for this project, if you want I can record the solo on your track, clean or muted trumpet, and you'll fit it in the mix the way you want.
I like your track, I think my last one was unintentionally a bit inspired from yours :))
I'll change it to be different... what does late hours to some people...

@kismael
Before going further with orchestration and arrangement, please tell me which trumpet tone fit better for you, muted or clean.
Thank you.

Just wanted to note that I can clean up/reduce the vinyl noise on my demo if needed. And also the slow intro loop is 1:58 long and the speedy loop for when the "heath" of the player gets low is 0:37 seconds long. Enjoy.

Is that music that you composed and recorded ? pretty impressive, especially that trumpet solo.

Just found out about this website, and I would like to participate in this project. Is it there deadline for this?

Cool piece Mihai, and awesome trumpet sound (and player as well :) ). Great job!

Mihai_Sorohan

I believe the deadline is March 30.
Thanks Nino for your nice words about my music. I was studying trumpet at "Gheorghe Dima" Music Academy of Cluj-Napoca, but just classical. Jazz I kind of learned by myself.

@xceed
Thanks.
I'm a trumpet player actually, guitar started just as a hobby.
I also offer some free trumpet loops on my website: http://www.mihaisorohan.net/downloads.shtml
Maybe those could be useful to people who don't have trumpet players hidden in their basement :)))

@ShazyPop
Don't want to seem picky, but how can you sell copyrights to something that is entirely made out of someone's else music ? If it's public domain, that makes it free, so selling it it's a bit weird... but I might be not aware of all legal boundaries of that.

xceed

Mihai, I will check the loops later certainly as the idea sound very interesting specially knowing your trumpet skills!

@ShazyPop: I understand you used a piece of music played by some other musician? I agree with Mihai moreover in my opinion, idea of selling a piece of other musician work (even if it really is 'public domain') as own composition is rather not legal... at least not ok/fair . I also wonder who is the author of the original and is he credited?

Hi everybody
I think it works something like this:
When one creates something, he naturaly has moral rights, as a creator. Moral rights are not transferable, because nobody can buy a right to say he created something if he didn't. But one can transfer rights to use, copy, distribute and modify the material. It's something like that , as far as I know.

Mihai_Sorohan

Depends.
If you sell something under exclusive license, you loose all the rights over it. You can't resell, transform or make derivate works of it. Sometimes you even don't get credited.

If you're referring to the public domain issue, then here's my opinion:
You take something for free just because passed 20 years from original creator's death. Then you sell it... how fair is that ?
You don't credit the original artist.
You don't offer it for free, as you took it.
You don't put any effort into making it.
You use entirely someone's else material.
... then you call it your creation and sell copyrights to it, get payed for someone else's work...

Do that seem fair ? Is that a motivation for an artist to keep creating new art ? Is that fair to the independent musicians ?
Some study music in school (12 years) then work to get in Conservatory or Music Academy (5 years) then try their best to learn how to record/ mix, buy microphones, preamps, put up a project studio... then someone else take some loops from internet and get the credit !

hi everyone,

thank you for participating in this project and congratulations to mihai for his outstanding song.
i hope everybody can still use their submissions for other projects, so that the time was not wasted!

all the best!

Thank you.
That's quite a wonderful news to me.
Congratulations to all composers, was a very tough competition and I'm honored to be participating together with such good musicians. I'm sure that they can sell their tracks on AudioJungle or Revostock very easy.
There is no such thing as wasted time when you boost your creativity :)
