Crowded Podcast - Episode 2

BACKGROUND:
Crowded is a radio show made entirely from audio solicited from workers on the crowdsourcing website, Mechanical Turk. It was commissioned by Rhizome.org in 2009. Each episode will have a theme or a mechanism around which the crowdsourced samples are gathered. This episode is about fostering camaraderie between MT workers. One of the great things about MT is the diversity of the workers and the diversity of the experience that they bring. How can we use this to benefit the workers, not just the requesters.

ASSIGNMENT:
I need someone to take the collected files (link below) and edit it together into a 25-35 minute show. You will notice that a few of the samples are "intros". I would like to use some percentage of all of these intros. The rest of the clips can be edited and mixed together however you see fit. There are only 33 minutes of audio samples in total, but I imagine there will be some musical interludes.

One of the challenges of this episode is going to be sorting through the material and matching the 'questions' with the 'answers'. This will make more sense when you download the files. Obviously, the clips should be arranged so that the questions precede the answers. Please also feel free to go to the crowded.fm website - some of the titles of the post could be helpful. See links below.

There are also some clips with great ambient sound in the background. It would be great for the music to drop out in some of these points so that we can hear that background.

Also, please note that, just because I have included a clip in the ZIP file doesn't mean it is completely usable. If a clip is unintelligible, please try to clean it up. If you still can't understand what is being said, please don't use it.

If there aren't enough answers to one of the really good questions, please let me know and I will gather more from the MT workers.

The workers seemed to really want to talk about issues relating to MTurk itself, but this makes pretty boring radio, so in the latter half of the gathering period, I asked them not to talk about their problems with MTurk itself. Please use these clips, but sparingly.

Please submit a 5-8 minute sample of how you would handle the editing of the show. A winner will be chosen from this sample and asked to complete the project. The deadline for submissions is March 16. This is supposed to be the February episode, so I am a bit behind on the deadline. If you have any questions or need more material, please contact me.

All submitters will get a link to their site on the Crowded.fm website. The winner will be featured on the site.

INSPIRATION
I am looking for a cross between This American Life and Joe Frank. There should be soft instrumental background music through much of it, but not necessarily all of it. I also like the slightly experimental quality of Radiolab. But this should be subtle - keep the focus on the content, not the effects. (links below)

Hi,
Here is a short sample using my own original music. It is pre-mix, and very rough.

Hi Jeff

I wanted to participate in the first part, I like the idea behind this radio show like podcast.

but the recording were so terrible.

you see jeff, instead of focusing the work itself we need to clean those recordings

I agree that the quality of the recordings is not good. It is definitely a problem and I am working on a better solution. Unfortunately, for now, this is what I have to work with.

Hello Jeff,

I will try to use these recordings in the best possible way i can and make a preview for you in 2 to 3 days.

There has been a question about the feel/mood/pacing for this episode. And the answer is - it's up to you. Honestly, I don't know how this question/answer format should sound, so whatever you can come up with that sounds good, go for it! Of course, you can listen to the first episode to see what kind of stuff I like (Thanks Tom!), but this episode may very well require a different format because the material is so different.

Hi Jeff

I heard the recordings, well I can clean them for 100$ (If I choose not to participate).

I can upload 2 clean recordings to show you my abilities.

If there were names instead of hexadecimal numbers we didn't have to guess who said what,
to who some responses belongs to ?

where some parts fits, you see this is all basic stuff you should know that.
.

If you did it (or who upload those recordings), this could be a big time saver,
you could get better results from us.

because sometimes the source is so degraded and some people have heavy accent.

You see what I mean the art itself (music) instead of doing these things.

Think about it.

I can clean those recordings, I have what it takes to do any part of this project.

But when I need not only to do that but also to start to arrange them,

I'm sorry this is too much for me I wouldn't waste my time.

Don't take it personally do what ever you want to.

I forgot to mention that the intro is already done, so don't bother with that -- or, you can put it at the beginning.

Hi Jeff,

For some reason what i typed in when I submitted my demo hasn't appeared up there.

I wasn't sure if you wanted someone different this time but figured I'd upload something
anyway.

Cheers.
